The Peggy Olson school of advertising

I haven’t followed a traditional path into advertising.

I didn’t go to ad school. I pretended to be animals and performed my own death at drama school instead.

I played the lesbian journalist, Renee Webb, on South African soapie “Scandal!” for two years. I moved to London with the hopes of “making it”. I worked as a nanny, charity fundraiser, promo girl, temp receptionist, member of a “rent-a-crowd” service. I wrote, produced and performed my own short films and plays. I was “discovered” while working on the reception desk at AMV.

The in-house production team, Flare, took a chance on the brazen girl sneaking around the office on the weekends producing and directing a pilot for her webseries. This haiku secured my job as a creative. I worked on content for brands like HP and Nicorette and TVCs for Pepsi Max and Walkers Sensations. Being on-set was my ad school. I partnered with this beautiful human. Together we trolled Twitter and helped keep Pride celebrations alive during the Covid-19 pandemic.

I don’t believe traditional approaches always work.

I believe in the power of storytelling and social-first creative that truly engages the audience. Whether that’s reflecting cultural trends and experiences, enticing the audience to play with the content, empowering them to put their own stamp on the campaign or building positive brand associations.
